SINGAPORE : One worker has been confirmed dead and four others trapped in a construction site accident at Ayer Rajah Avenue on Thursday.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said five other workers were missing, while 28 others were taken to hospitals to be treated for injuries after the cave-in.

Ten injured workers were taken to the National University Hospital. One is in serious condition, six in stable condition with limb injuries, while three have minor injuries.

Officials said one of the 10 injured was believed to be a Singaporean.

Another 15 workers, most with minor injuries, have been sent to the Singapore General Hospital.

Three other workers - two Bangladeshis and a Thai - were taken to Alexandra Hospital with injuries to their limbs.

SCDF said the workers were working on a six-storey steel girdle when it collapsed into the basement of the building. The building is next to the INSEAD Institute along Ayer Rajah Avenue One.

The collapse site is a square of about 200 by 200 metres, and three metres deep.

Rescue officers are continuing their search for the missing workers believed to be pinned under the steel beams.

Last week, the collapse of a temporary wall at an MRT construction site caused a road section along Nicoll Highway to cave in, leaving four people dead. - CNA
